ALMOST half a century ago the great Australian actor Peter Finch won an Academy Award for urging everyone to stick their heads out the window and shout “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore.” In one of the greatest screen monologues ever, Finch’s character looked into the camera and declared “We know things are bad. Worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy.” That was almost 50 years ago and in many ways things have gotten worse. So many aspects of life – from politics, social media, entertainment, and even retail shopping – have anRead More →

The Holden Monaro is considered, among a certain demographic of the population, an icon of Australian motoring. Indeed, when we actually made things like cars the modern version produced between 2001 and 2005 sold in vast numbers to petrol heads, mums and dads and collectors alike. Man, I loved that car when it was launched but alas, as a poor long-suffering PAYG slave I could not afford one. So, I’d spend time in Holden showrooms just looking at the thing and dreaming of the day………. It will come as no surprise that as a Toowoomba girl the managing director also had a soft spot forRead More →

The announcement says it all. Having spent hours in a large aluminium cylinder we are invited to disembark, but please observe appropriate distancing. Face masks at all times, except when eating or drinking, so……..almost never. As always, the great unwashed leap from their seats and do that strange mad scramble to access overhead lockers and then stand stooping for 20 minutes while the air bridge is installed. Some things never change. Anyway, we’ll get to that. A while back I started prowling the house and showing signs of being less than content. As you know gentle readers, I am a man of sunny disposition andRead More →

I’ve owned and managed holiday rentals for several years now, and one thing that has always concerned me is the prospect of dirty greasy nasty little hooligans renting a property and turning it into a party house. The risks of such an incident are obvious: Property damage, noise complaints, theft, fights and assaults, and possibly even local council issues. Here’s the steps I’ve taken to greatly reduce these risks to almost zero! Property Descriptions Pay attention to how you’re presenting your holiday accommodation in your marketing. I always make an effort to clearly state in the marketing that the property is not a party house,Read More →

If you don’t know whether the cladding on your building is combustible (or to use the less scary word – non-conforming), you are soon going to be forced to find out. The issue over what cladding has been used on buildings crystallised after the Grenfell Tower fire in the UK in 2017.  Australia’s equivalent (without the horrific loss of life in Grenfell) was the Lacrosse Tower fire in Melbourne in 2014. The ABC’s Four Corners covered the issue in this excellent episode. Since then the wheels of respective state governments have turned very slowly.  Victoria has their cladding task force and has now come up with a rectification solution that will allow lot ownersRead More →

New smoke alarm legislation in Queensland came into play from 1 January 2017 and is expected to drastically cut the number of deaths from house fires. The new legislation requires every domestic home, including rental properties, to have smoke alarms that are photoelectric, interconnected, and either hard-wired or powered by a 10-year lithium battery. For property managers this means additional obligations with regards to the installation and maintenance of smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are currently required by law in all rental properties but the type of alarm installed is no longer something that can be left to the owner’s discretion. Failure to install the correctRead More →

Yesterday I was invited along to the BNE Airport Business Advisory Group Airport Tour. They hold these tours once a year to communicate to the business community their strategy and roadmap for the future. I’m pleased to report: it’s a very good roadmap and one of the things that makes me excited to live in South East Queensland over the next decade. The tour began, and ended, at the Accor’s brand new IBIS hotel and conference centre, opposite the domestic terminal. It’s an impressive hotel, particularly for a 3.5-star offering, but what really amazes me is that it’s the 3rd hotel Accor have launched inRead More →

Do you wish to list your business “for sale” or actually list your business “to sell?” There is a difference and here we look to identify some of the issues to assist when you decide to place your business on the market. As with most businesses, buyer appetite continues to evolve & management rights are no different. I have written various articles on aspects of the management rights industry & think it is important for all business owners to be well aware of how to move forward when it is time to sell & to also understand buyer needs. Most buyers that I speak to are considering what their exit strategy is before they make a decision on whatRead More →
